The Chiang Mai Provincial Road Safety Command has reported a significant reduction in road accidents, injuries and fatalities during the seven-day intensive safety campaign over the 2026 New Year holiday, with figures falling by more than 68% compared to the three-year average.
According to the command’s summary of road accident prevention and mitigation measures carried out between 30th December 2025 and 5th January 2026, a total of 16 road accidents were recorded, down from a three-year average of 51 cases — a decrease of 68.63%.
The number of injured persons stood at 14, representing a 71.43% reduction, while three fatalities were reported, down 57.14% from the previous average.
Despite the overall improvement, analysis of accident causes shows that speeding remains the primary factor, accounting for 33.33% of cases. Drink-driving and dangerous overtaking followed, each responsible for 26.67% of accidents. Motorcycles continued to be the most accident-prone vehicles, involved in more than 70% of all cases.
Hod District recorded the highest cumulative number of accidents, while fatalities were reported in Chiang Dao, Phrao and Omkoi districts.
Meanwhile, 12 districts — Doi Saket, San Kamphaeng, Hang Dong, Mae Wang, Mae Taeng, Wiang Haeng, Fang, Chai Prakan, Doi Tao, Doi Lor, Mae Chaem and Galyani Vadhana — reported zero injuries and fatalities throughout the entire campaign period.
Chiang Mai authorities noted that while the overall statistics show a clear and encouraging decline, the public is still urged to exercise caution, particularly by avoiding speeding and drink-driving, to further reduce losses and ensure long-term road safety.
