Pigeon gang running amok

Illegal pigeon feed sellers continue to plague Tha Pae Gate’s public square, despite repeated crackdowns. The group aggressively pressures tourists to buy feed and photo services, leaving the area filthy with droppings and, according to authorities, harming Chiang Mai’s tourism image. Although arrests were made on 25th December, the same sellers returned on 5th January, scattering large amounts of feed and drawing hundreds of pigeons to the area. Residents say the so-called “pigeon gang” has operated for years, disappearing briefly after arrests before reappearing. Health officials warn large flocks pose serious hygiene and disease risks, especially during the cool season.
