Today marijuana is decriminalised here in Thailand and 4,251 prisoners from Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Nan, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai and Phayao have their fingers crossed in hopes of being released.

All people currently undergoing any court cases will have their cases dismissed immediately.

Between the 1st of January 2021 until 8th June of this year, a total of  4,251 people, in 4,263 cases, totalling 2,757 kilograms of seized marijuana, were convicted. Of that number, 1,454 were for possession, 361 were for smoking, with Chang Rai having the highest number of cases.

There are eight prisoners currently serving in Chiang Mai jail for marijuana crimes alone, and all eight expect to be released by this evening.

Other prisoners have cases involving other crimes, and will be decided upon in due course.
