CityNews – The Royal Society of Thailand has agreed to add three local Thai dialects to the Royal Society Version of the Thai dictionary in order to conserve Thai languages.
On May 29, a meeting was held to discuss the status and future of three local langauges, and whether to add these dialects to the Royal Society Version of the Thai dictionary, a flagship project by Secretary-General Pongsak Siriwong.
Local scholars and northern Thai scholars also attended the meeting.
The three Thai dialects that have been added to the Royal Society Version of the Thai dictionary are Northern Language, Northeastern Language (Isaan), and Southern Language.
Since 2012, there have been radio initiatives to encourage people to submit and discuss words most commonly used in the three main areas. These submissions were then discussed and added to the dictionary.
Northern language was discussed first, with future meetings planned to discuss the other dialects soon.
