The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) have introduced a newly discovered comet, C/2025 R2 (SWAN), or SWAN25B. It can be observed using binoculars or telescopes in the western sky from early evening until 7.50 pm.
Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN), or SWAN25B, was discovered by Ukrainian amateur astronomer Vladimir Bezugly on September 11, 2025. The discovery was made using images captured by the SOHO solar probe and was later confirmed by Australian astronomer Michael Mattiazzo, who observed the comet through binoculars.
The comet is predicted to make its closest approach to Earth on October 20, 2025. However, recent photographs show an unusual and asymmetrical shape in the comet’s head, which suggests that its nucleus may be breaking apart.
