The 2026 Inthakin City Pillar Festival got underway yesterday afternoon (13th May) with a procession of Phra Chao Fon Saen Ha, Lanna Buddha image housed at Wat Chang Taem and brought out just twice a year — during Songkran and Inthakin. Believed to summon seasonal rains to benefit farmers, the image was carried through the city’s streets on a ceremonial float, accompanied by horses, ancient warriors, dancers and residents in traditional Lanna dress, before returning to Wat Chedi Luang for enshrinement.

Devotees are already gathering at Wat Chedi Luang to present khan dok — offerings of marigolds, jasmine, safflower and orchids paired with incense, candles and turmeric water — at the city pillar shrine. The festival runs daily from 6am to midnight through 19th May, with the closing Ork Inthakin ceremony on 20th May.

As a spectator, all you have to do is dress modestly or better yet, in Lanna costume, and be aware of what people around you are doing. Do what you are comfortable with, and just be respectful! You’re good, taking pictures, smiling, participating.
