The Inthakin ceremony is rooted in ancient Lanna belief, invoking the city pillar for protection, peace and rain to ensure fertile lands. Held annually in accordance with the Lanna lunar calendar — entering in the 8th month and concluding in the 9th — it is also known as the “Month 8 In, Month 9 Out” tradition.
Chiang Mai Deputy Governor Siwa Thamikanon described the festival as uniquely Chiang Mai’s own — the only ceremony of its kind in Thailand — and a key piece of the province’s cultural soft power, featured in the official “12 Months, 12 Festivals” tourism calendar.
Locals and visitors alike are invited to attend dressed in traditional or Thai silk attire. The festival runs daily from 6am to midnight, 13th–19th May, at Wat Chedi Luang.
