Foot and Mouth Disease on the Rise

CityNews – The Ministry of Public Health has found that 20,777 people in Thailand became sick from hand, foot and mouth disease this year.

The Minister of Public Health, Clinical Professor Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said that there are 20,777 people or 73% who suffered from the disease between January and June 27th. In addition, the north has the highest incidence rate. All patients are children between ages 1-3. Cause of disease comes from the weather, unclean hands or feet and an environment where germs thrive. Parents and teachers are urged to watch out for children’s hygiene, keeping hands clean before eating, using serving spoons and keeping their nails short.

Dr. Sopon Mekthon, the Secretary of Public Health also said that red and scarlet spots on hands, feet and mouths are indicators of the disease. If there is a high fever then patients should see a doctor. For more information calls Department of Disease Control at 1422.
