Kru Od, the charismatic abbot of Wat Chedi Luang, has launched a new campaign to find value in elephant dung.

Citing the fact that elephant dungs amount to up to 10% of an animal’s body weight, provides a consistent daily amount and is filled with nutrients, since elephants eat on healthy vegetation, he has opened what he calls, “Elephant Dung Bank”.

The Elephant Dung Bank will provide high value fertiliser to farmers to be distributed to the network of organic farmers across the north. This fertiliser will be good for pumpkin, papaya, herbs and banana farms, he said. He also said that a delicious mushroom also likes to grow on this dung and can be used in many dishes.

He encourages farmers across the north of Thailand to think outside the box and to find solutions and ideas to add value to what may otherwise be seen as having none.
