Chiang Mai’s continuing cold spell has boosted blanket sales at Nawarat Market, where vendors report demand rising several-fold this week. Popular items include quilts, fleece blankets, grey khee-nga blankets and cartoon designs priced from 100 baht. Many buyers from highland areas — where temperatures are even lower — have come down to purchase in bulk. Several organisations have also placed large orders for winter-relief donations, prompting shops to double their stock.

The Northern Meteorological Centre forecasts a new cold surge from 14th December, with temperatures expected to drop by another 2–4°C.

Public health chief Dr. Waranyu Jamnongprasertporn warns of six cold-season illnesses: influenza, COVID-19, pneumonia, RSV, diarrhoea and chickenpox. From 1st January to 30th November 2025, Chiang Mai recorded 29,103 influenza cases — three times higher than last year, with no deaths.

Officials also cautioned about gas water heater hazards after two fainting cases at a Chom Thong resort. Proper ventilation and oxygen support equipment are advised.
