Chiang Mai made history on Sunday as the first city in Thailand to officially launch the 2026 Pride season, with a full day of events under the banner “Inclusive City Chiang Mai — เชียงใหม่เมืองแห่งความเท่าเทียม.”

The centrepiece of the afternoon was a MOU signing ceremony at the Tha Pae Gate, held from 3pm to 5pm, in which representatives from government agencies, businesses, civil society organisations, human rights networks and media came together to formally declare their commitment to building Chiang Mai into a city of equality.

Speakers at the ceremony included Chiang Mai Governor Ratthapon Naradit, Provincial Social Development and Human Security Officer Ploypha Ploytubtim, Chiang Mai Pride president Sirisak Chaiyathet and Deputy Digital Economy and Society Minister Buntida Somchai.

The ceremony featured an opening performance, a screening of a “Road to World Pride 2030” video, and a collective photo of partner organisations — as well as a consent form signing drive to support Thailand’s bid to host World Pride in the future.

From 5.30pm, the Chiang Mai Pride Parade set off from the Chiang Mai Buddhist Centre, moving through Night Bazaar Road and Loi Kroh Road before arriving at Tha Pae Gate, drawing participation from civil society groups, youth networks, artists, activists and businesses. On the main stage, welcomes were given by Miss World Thailand 2026 Kanthira Techapattranakul, followed by the “Chiang Mai Pride People Voice” segment, which gave the floor to representatives from Amnesty International Thailand, Sapphic Pride, MPLUS, Young Pride, Mermaid Pride and several other organisations. The evening closed with a live performance by the Luk Thung Rom Daeng band from Sankamphaeng School.

The event also positions Chiang Mai firmly on the road to World Pride 2030, reinforcing the city’s profile as a hub of diversity and inclusion.
