Chiang Mai Chinatown Chinese New Year Festival boosted by 69 extra flights

The Chiang Mai Chinatown Chinese New Year Festival 2026 has officially opened, transforming Wichayanon and Chang Moi roads into a vibrant red venues welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse. Large crowds of Thai and international visitors, especially Chinese tourists, have arrived in the city, supported by 69 additional flights during the festive period.

The opening ceremony took place late this morning (17th February 2026) at Warorot Market intersection, led by Chiang Mai Vice Governor Chatchawan Panya, Chinese Consul-General Chen Hai Long, and Chiang Mai Deputy Mayor Suntorn Yamsiri. Highlights include a colourful parade from Tha Pae Gate to Warorot Market, golden dragon dances, Thai-Chinese cultural performances, and thousands of lanterns illuminating the historic Chinatown area and Ping River.

The festival runs from 17th–18th February, centred around Warorot and Ton Lam Yai markets, featuring over 100 food booths, cultural performances, youth showcases, and merit-making at the historic Pung Tao Gong Shrine.

Between 16th–22nd February, Chiang Mai International Airport added 69 special and charter flights from major Chinese and Taiwanese cities, boosting tourist arrivals. The festival is expected to generate 100–200 million baht for the local economy.
