The British Embassy Bangkok hosted its outreach roadshow in Northern Thailand on 13th-16th January 2026, marking 170 years of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Thailand. This roadshow is part of a nationwide series of events celebrating this historic milestone and is the fourth in a series of outreach initiatives aimed at strengthening people-to-people connections across sectors including business, trade, education, science and innovation under the theme of “Shared Values & Culture”

British Ambassador to Thailand, Mark Gooding, and Embassy staff visited Chiang Rai, Lampang and Chiang Mai, where they met with provincial governors, local communities, and businesses.

“This Northern roadshow has been a true celebration of the vibrant people-to-people connections between the United Kingdom and Thailand through culture, education and sports. The North of Thailand is known for its culture and cuisine and is a popular destination among British travelers. Chiang Mai ranks among the top five Thai cities with the highest number of British residents.”

The centrepiece of the roadshow was the British Fair which began in 2025, supported by BJC Big C Group as the principal sponsor. Held at Big C Chiang Rai 2 on 13 January and Big C Extra Chiangmai 2 on 15th January, the events welcomed hundreds of visitors from local communities. Both fairs featured live music, activities, and video presentations celebrating the longstanding UK-Thailand partnership.

Over the four-day programme, the Embassy team engaged with more than 50 Thai university students from Chiang Mai University, which has research collaborations and joint programs with a number of British universities.

Aswin Techajareonvikul, Chief Executive Officer and President of BJC Big C Group, shared: “We are honoured to welcome H.E. Mr. Mark Gooding OBE, the British Ambassador to Thailand, to our Big C stores in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai as part of the 170th anniversary celebrations of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the United Kingdom. BJC Big C Group is proud to support the British Fair as the main sponsor and to play a key role in bringing British products closer to Thai consumers. This special roadshow highlights not only the long-standing trade relationship between our two nations, but also our shared commitment to cultural exchange, community engagement, and sustainability.”
