CityNews – At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19th, Mayor Tassanai Buranupakorn called a meeting to discuss the increase tourism in Chiang Mai Municipal’s jurisdiction. In attendance were representatives from the tourism industry like hotel and guesthouse owners.

Mayor Tassanai said he had met with foreign consuls to go over tourist guidelines for Chiang Mai’s Songkran preparations. The municipality published pamphlets entitled Living in Chiang Mai with Happiness in English and Chinese that cover the basic “Dos and Don’ts” for foreigners. The pamphlets are to be distributed to hotel and guesthouse lobbies, restaurants, and malls.

“It’s great for Chiang Mai’s economy to have more visitors. I’m more concerned about the prejudice toward Chinese tourists. It’s our collective duties as a host to inform them about our traditions, cultures, what to do, and what not to do” said the Mayor.

Phunat Thanalaopanit, President of Northern Thailand Hotel Association, mentioned that due to many incidents involving Chinese tourists in the past couple of weeks, there should be better ways to prepare Chinese tourists about life in Chiang Mai, beginning at their first steps through airport immigration. He said the municipality’s information pamphlets were great, but redundant. There have already been many publications by other government offices.

Since the film Lost in Thailand was released in China, Chinese tourists are accounted for 40% of all tourists in Chiang Mai. He predicted that the number would go up to 45% during this year’s Songkran.
