CityNews – Chiang Mai Transportation Office will organize the 12th licence plate auction (301 plates starting with Thai alphabetic character “?”) on 31st August at the Empress Convention Centre, The Empress Hotel.

In the past people who believe certain numbers are lucky have spent millions on a plate. In Chiang Mai we reported one plate going for 1.8 million baht last year, while in Phuket plates have gone for as much as 12 million baht.

The previous auctions raised around 260 million baht for road safety campaigns which helped save a lot of lives, says the office. The campaigns include providing helmets for motorcyclists, providing equipment for disabled people, training school for bus drivers, installing CCTV cameras and speed cameras, as well as building a road safety learning centre.

While the millions raised through these plates is quite astounding, Thailand and Chiang Mai according to accident statistics remains one of the most unsafe places in the world to drive a car or ride a bike.
