Breathing Easy in Polluted Times
Vogmask, a California-based company, was first created by Burning Man attendees who sought to create a high-quality breathing mask as a solution to the dust storms in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Because these storms are so common, those attending Burning Man often have to arrive armed with goggles and masks to face the harsh conditions, which can cause respiratory troubles. Now, Vogmask has arrived in Chiang Mai, and just in time too: providing the option of a new, high-quality mask designed to help residents of the city breathe easier throughout the year’s worst months of air quality.
The Exonerated at The Gate Theatre
When the lights go down in the orchestra of the Gate Theatre, a single spotlight illuminates the stage. A lone man looks up at the audience and begins to tell his story. His character is the first of six to come forward and recount the events that led each of them to be wrongfully convicted in American courts, condemned to death row, and then released years later when their convictions were finally overturned.

After a concerted and focused effort, and national protest and condemnation, the Treasury Department agreed to gift it to the city of Chiang Mai.
Hiking Trail at Mae Kampong
Some of you may know Mae Kampong, a small little village located on the hills of Mae On in Chiang Mai. Now becoming a popular tourist attraction due to its good atmosphere and a perfect balance of exciting activities and relaxing mountain lifestyles. The area is probably most famous for the Flight of the Gibbon and the superb massages found up there, probably to work out all those stress knots from the thrill of the ziplines. There are also many homestays there too, great for those who are into slipping back to nature. Given that fact, I thought I’d introduce you all to something a little less known about Mae Kampong – its amazing nature trails, perfect for a hike (especially now before the cool winter months disappear). I contacted village headman, uncle Phrommin Puangmala to point me in the right direction!

Dee Jai at Jai Thep: A fantastic new festival on Chiang Mai’s calendar
I am an American student studying at Chiang Mai University who had the honour of attending one of the best festivals Chiang Mai has ever seen, according to many of its fans and followers. Doors opened at 10:30am, and I arrived at the festival in Pun Pun Organic Farm by 2pm ready to engage, dance, twist and laugh the day and night away with people prepared to spread love and positivity. The promotion flyers for the Jai Thep Festival were hanging on the walls of many music and eclectic arts venues all over town for weeks leading up the festival, such as Northgate Jazz Co-op, Mixology, and Overstand Cafe, so I knew the work put into it would be immaculate.

Opening of JoJo Sanctuary: teaching rural children and families about trafficking awareness, healthy relationships, internet safety and parenting strategies
Orawan was heartbroken. She had just seen a young boy from her village in Doi Saket working late at night selling cigarettes and alcohol in the parking lot of the grocery store. When she had questioned him about what he was doing, she found out his parents couldn’t pay for him to continue school after 6th grade and they needed him to go to the city and find work to support the family. When she asked if his parents knew how he was making money, he said that they would be devastated if they knew, but he felt a responsibility to take care of his family. As Orawan drove home, she couldn’t get this boy out of her head and she knew his story was not unique in her village. After spending years working in anti-trafficking in the city of Chiang Mai, she decided it was time she focused on helping the families in her own back yard.
New Riding Arena for Children with Special Needs
Three percent of Thai children have special needs, according to the CMUHippotherapy web site, a collaborative programme working through horses with special needs children here in Chiang Mai. There is a lack of access to good care and therapy for these thousands of children as they need to have special and professionally trained personnel working with them on their physical, emotional as well as social development. Teaching parents how to interact and work with special needs children is also another big challenge.

Tattoos in Honour of His Majesty
Mourning is personal and many Thais are doing so in their own ways. Unfortunately there have been some very unpleasant instances in the past few days of individuals and mobs who have attacked, verbally or physically, those who are not mourning, or those who are not doing so in the way they find acceptable. We at Citylife believe that with 70 million Thai people, it is not only impossible, but dangerous to expect grief to be expressed in a conformed way.

On August 4th, Jennifer Harhigh was appointed the new United States Consul General for Chiang Mai. Her job is to lead the consultant office, which is US government presence in northern Thailand. As a new intern at Citylife and an American from Indiana, I walked across the bridge in hopes of making an appointment for an interview and was surprised to have managed to catch her for half an hour between meetings.
