Special scoop: Chiangkham Luang Resort and Restaurant

 |  September 25, 2012

It’s a fact; wide open spaces, fresh air and nature are good for us. To really get a good measure of these glorious elements, pack your bags and head out of the city to Chiang Kham Luang Resort in Chiang Dao, roughly an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai city centre.

As you draw closer to Chiang Dao, you can’t help but feel in awe of the lofty Doi Luang Mountain towering steeply above ‘the city of stars’. Not far from the mountain, sits Chiang Kham Luang Resort, a beautifully landscaped resort sitting on over 70 rai of hilly land surrounded by teak forests. The resort has a range of accommodation perfect for quiet privacy, or large groups. They even have meeting areas indoors and out, as well as many recreational spaces. Most rooms come in the form of individual bungalow cabins with en-suites and generous balconies overlooking the extensive lawn and trees. The cabins are decorated with a ‘contemporary-country’ design; quality wooden floors and furniture, cotton bedding, duck feather pillows and quilts, air-conditioning, tea and coffee facilities, fridge, flat screen TV, Wi-Fi and a choice of other accessories.

The central building gives the impression of a large log cabin in an Alpine ski resort. Despite being encircled by tropical rainforests, the house has large open fireplaces and floor rugs. The spacious rooms are cosy yet elegant with tasteful soft furnishings, many large sofas, arm chairs and polished wooden tables and chairs. We actually felt like we were staying in someone’s private mountain home, as the lodge was adorned with the resort owner’s large collection of jade statues, Chinese Ceramics and paintings. All very cosy and perfect for a snuggle up in the winter months to come.

If you simply need to get away to relax, then this is a perfect getaway. So close to the city, so refreshingly embraced in nature, and with all the mod cons and facilities expected from a quality property. They have an excellent gym, with sauna and Jacuzzi and the restaurant serves up international fare such as parma ham and melon for starters, succulent beef steaks for main and melt-in-the-middle warm chocolate cake for dessert. A wine buffet at only 590 baht between 6-9 p.m. is also being offered.

Either hop onto the resort’s bicycle and simply meander around the area visiting local sights such as Chiang Dao Cave, the hot springs and waterfall, of curl up with a good book and laze your days away.
