Special Scoop: Chez Marco

 |  November 29, 2013

When you’re looking for a seriously delicious meal in Chiang Mai, you needn’t look much further than Chez Marco.A taste of the French Riviera in the middle of Loi Kroh Road, the restaurant is known for its fun and lively atmosphere, its “handsome chef and beautiful staff,” and of course, it’s fabulous food!

Developed by the friendly French-Japanese chef Marco and his Japanese father Tsuneo (a.k.a. “Papa”), Chez Marco has won the Thailand Tatler award four times, along with countless other distinctions over the years.Tsuneo received a first class honour from the world-renowned Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School in France and says that he now cooks European food better than Japanese food, thanks to his long time experience working in five starhotels in France, Canada and America. However, he has also brought to the table (literally!) his Japanese eye for simple yet interesting dish decoration, a talent made clear from the moment each beautifully arranged plate is laid down in front of you. Of course, the food tastes even better than it looks, so prepare yourself for a fanciful array of hearty French-Mediterranean dishes that are guaranteed to satisfy.

Previously known as an exclusively dinnertime destination, Chez Marco has just released an exciting new announcement: henceforth, they will also be serving lunch! Still a work in progress, Marco’s “up to me” menu features adelectable variety of Euro-fusion favourites, with plenty of lighter options perfectly suited to a midday meal. Pasta, salads and sandwiches are plentiful, and the full booze menu is available for all you day-drinkers out there.

For a delicious and nutritious option, the Japanese-inspired tataki tuna (part of the special menu, only available on occasion) served with spinach, capers, and a yummy vinaigrette sauce cannot be missed. Looking for something a bit more robust? Try the local rib eye beef served on a sizzling hot plate with a colourful array of baked veggies (but don’t ask for well-done – Marco says that means you don’t respect the meat!). For the perfect afternoon dessert, don’t miss Marco’s sister-in-law’s fabulous homemade Love Load ice cream, imported directlyfrom Bangkok, which comes in a variety of unique flavours – even wasabi!

Of course, Chez Marco is still a top dinner destination as well, perfect for a night of merriment with friends, a family meal, or a hot date (for those not afraid to share their love of serious food, of course!).  Start your culinary journey with the pan-fried haloumi cheese with marinated grilled vegetables, dried tomato and feta cheese,or the homemade Gravlax salmon. For the main course, don’t miss the decadent moussaka or the fabulous fresh salmon fillet with dill cream – which I can honestly say was the tenderest salmon I’ve ever tasted. You will be seriously stuffed by the time you finish, but the desserts are too delicious to be missed, so check out something light like the fluffy pannacotta with homemade mango ice cream.

Chez Marco’s menu includes a full page of vegetarian options, and prices are reasonable considering the large portion size, starting at under 100 baht and topping out at 990 for the tenderloin topped with foie gras. A full bar with an extensive wine and cocktail list is also available, with house wines at 190 baht a glass and bottles from all over the world starting at 990 baht. Check out the blackboard for specials.

If you’re looking for some of the best food Chiang Mai has to offer, Chez Marco is not to be missed – and now, thanks to their new lunchtime offerings, you’ve got more opportunities than ever to head on down and give it a try!
