Down a dark soi off Chang Peuk Road is an eyebrow raising new venue which would sit pretty comfortably on any capital city’s main avenue – trendy, modern, chic – Metro is a self-styled metrosexual hangout. As young men gyrate upstairs at Adam’s Apple, Metro hopes to bring the straight and gay community together in a trés chic little space serving finger foods, cocktails and beers. Hip students from nearby Rajabhat University mingle with young expat couples, Thai men, and the odd tourist deep in the comfy sofas, perched on the swivelling barstools or outdoors. Very reasonably priced, cocktails are 120 baht, finger food platters 100 baht. This modish new Metro is a perfect place to stop off for a night cap after dinner, an aprés drink before heading out, or simply a venue to bring a group of friends, lounge back, enjoy the ambient house music, and lovely décor.

The masterpiece housing complex really is a masterpiece of gated community housing. Although still under construction, the complex will boast over 200 houses in various styles, all built with the latest industry technology. The landscaping is impeccable, as is the complex planning. What are most impressive though are the amenities. The estate will include a large fitness centre with big pool, gym, spa, sauna; there will be shops selling all your everyday needs, ATMs, 7/11s, alongside a walkway that runs around a beautiful pond. There will also be a sports complex with futsal stadium, tennis courts, badminton, takraw and basketball courts. With CCTV and 24hr security, as well as 24hr restaurants that deliver to your house, all day laundry and other services, you may never need to leave this complex, or ‘small town’ as the owner referred to it.

Everyday is a holiday at this new addition to the bustling bar scene at JJ Market. Alcoholiday has only been open a month, nevertheless, on any given night it can be found packed and frenetic. With cheap booze, a great mix of both foreigners and Thais, classics hits filling the background and a display of ultra-short skirts as the university students catwalk past. It may well have been the two jugs, Alcohol Thursday and Alcohol Wednesday, that Citylife staff consumed that brought about the holiday spirit. Each day of the week has a special cocktail jug for 89 baht. Mondays: pineapple, Tuesdays: strawberry, Wednesdays: mint, Thursdays: orange, Fridays: apple, Saturdays: grape and their best selling Sunday treat: lychee. If you’re not sold yet let us tell you about the food, which is a great mix of the owner’s favourites: smoked salmon with chilli, garlic and basil in a great light sauce; northern Thai style som tam with pak sau; French fries and dip, all at unbeatable prices. So take a holiday and receive 10% off on food for being a Citylife reader.
