American Anarcho Punk Band to Tour South East Asia

 |  January 25, 2016

In February of 2016 The Elected Officials, an American Anarcho punk band from Austin, Texas and Santa Fe New Mexico will tour Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. The band’s lyrics include corporate funded politics, biased news, the cold war in Pakistan, International political prisoners, religious war and others. The band’s vocalist, Sophie Rousmaniere owned the legendary punk bar, Chaos City in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 2000 to 2004 as well as wrote an article about the burgeoning punk scene in Chiang Mai for Citylife; which helped spawn the vibrant punk scene Thailand has today.

Punk rock in some of these countries has met with some resistance – In Indonesia kids have had their mohawks shaved off by police and were sent to reeducation camps, in Malaysia you can be arrested for wearing the wrong black metal shirt, in Singapore it has been illegal to slam dance (Mosh) and lyrics need to be reviewed by authorities before booking and in Thailand freedom to comment on political issues is not always tolerated. Rousmaniere is also a broadcast film maker and is planning to produce a documentary film while on tour examining anarcho punk today in Asia.

The band includes former members of Systema Nervioso, 32 Fingers, Atomic Influx, Bootleg, Our Mother of Sorrow, Courtesy Flush and at least 15 other bands. Alyssa Leigh, touring bass player also plays in Punks on Parade. The Elected Officials delivers ripping punk rock reminiscent of The Dead Kennedys, Bikini Kill, DOA, and DRI. With lyrics about corporate money in politics, big box stores, religious pundits of oppression and other modern woes the Elected Officials is truly a Political Punk rock band for our modern times.
