CityNews – In accordance with World Animal Day, over 500 members of Save the Elephant foundation took to the streets of Chiang Mai on October 4, to promote the cessation of killing or injuring elephants for their ivory.
Led by the president of Save the Elephant Foundation, Saengduean Chailert, the group met at Three Kings Monument before walking around the city.
According to Saengduean, elephants are now at risk of extinction. Their habitats have been trespassed on and they have been illegally hunted for their ivory. Wild elephants have also been illegally caught to be sold to businesses.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness among Thais and foreigners that the numbers of elephants are dramatically falling and people should do more to save the elephants and refrain from entering into the ivory black market.
Chollada Mekratri, founder and president of The Voice Foundation, also joined the event and asked people to avoid buying accessories made out of ivory as it costs a life to have a piece of art made, which is unacceptable.
