CityNews – On May 31, a conference was held to discuss the quality and treatment of the water in the Mae Kha canal.

The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment said that by the end of the year, there will be new regulations which will force every business owner to install a grease trap into their drainage system, catching the pollutants before the water drains into the canal.

The move is part of a plan to return the Mae Kha canal to its historical glory, but can only be done with people from every sector working together.

The canal is an important lifeline to the city, flowing straight through the city centre. Over the last decade, it has been heavily polluted by both industries and communities living on its banks.

The plan is clean up the canal and in 3 years have clean flowing water rather than black polluted water.
