CityNews – Thailand Post announced this week that starting from yesterday, June 2, those sending packages must now show their ID. The announcement claimed that the office of the prime minister made the order in an attempt to control narcotic transport within the country.

The announcement reads “According to the notification of the Prime Minister’s office about narcotic control policy, it is required to show your ID card or passport to the postal counter officer for recording information.”(sic)

Both Thai nationals and foreigners now must show identification when sending packages through Thailand Post. If ID is not shown, the service will be denied.

It is unclear on what type of post will require ID and what will not.

A recent rise in the amount of illegal narcotics trafficked through the postal service is said to be the main cause for this new rule to come into effect.
