City7: Sandwiches

 |  November 29, 2013

O joy, thy name is sandwich. In what other form can you pack every one of your favourite foods between two slices of carbohydrate and shove it directly into your mouth? While Thai culture (unlike Vietnamese, see page 54), has not fully boarded the sandwich train, there are plenty of Western-friendly establishments in Chiang Mai that are sure to satisfy your cravings. Here are just a few to check out (in no particular order)!

1. Cat House

Adorable owner Jacky has just opened a second location at the Top North Guesthouse (in addition to the one off Chaiyaphum). Her fabulous Asian-fusion sandwiches, which can also be ordered as wraps, are one of a kind, from the Laos Style to the Curry to the Lap Essan.

2. Pickles

Not easy to find, tucked away on a soi off Chang Phuak, this place serves up the best corned beef sandwich in town: huge, homemade and thoroughly satisfying. Call ahead to make sure they’re open.

3. The Dukes

Chiang Mai’s reigning Western food champ (with several locations spread throughout the city) does not disappoint when it comes to sandwiches. Try the vegetarian Dagwood or the Italian-style meatball sandwich.

4. Amazing Sandwich

The self-proclaimed “shady island in a sea of rice” has been serving up Western-style sammies on Huay Kaew Road since 1998. While we don’t love the fact that you have to pay extra for toasting (what’s up with that?), the endless possibilities and deli-style order slip make this place a winner.

5. Bake N Bite

One of the city’s original providers of hearty sandwiches, Bake N Bite scores points with their homemade breads and plethora of options, such as the open faced pulled pork and yummy seasonal salmon and avocado.

6. Lucky 7 Cafe

This tiny hole-in-the-wall on the northeast corner of the moat serves up some seriously hearty Philly cheesesteak sandwiches: seven ounces of thin sliced grilled beef tenderloin smothered in stauteed onions and cheese on a soft sub roll.

7. The Gulf

Located in a quiet corner in Anusan Market, this Lebanese hideout offers some amazing falafel sandwiches on naan bread or a wrap. You have two options, a ready-made sandwich or plated DIY style, with plenty of vegetarian and carnivore toppings to choose from.
