It’s Yee Peng Time!

CityNews – November 24th, Chiang Mai Vice Governor Mongkol Suksai presided over the opening of Chiang Mai Yee Peng Festival at Tha Pae Gate.

The opening was joined by over 2,000 local authorities, representatives from both government and private sectors, residents, and both Thai and foreign tourists.

There were Thai dance performances, processions, fireworks, and lantern decoration to welcome the festival.

According to Boonlert Buranupakorn, mayor of Chiang Mai Provincial Administrative Organisation, the Chiang Mai Yee Peng Festival, between 24th – 26th November, is held by many organisations and institutes to maintain beautiful Lanna culture and traditions and to support Chiang Mai’s tourism economy.

This year’s festival has a catchy theme – “Join Chiang Mai Yee Peng Festival without giant crackers and alcohol.”

Residents are also encouraged to wear Lanna style dress.

At the festival, there will be the grand krathong processions contest to win a trophy
given by H.M. the King and other activities including small krathong processions contest, Yee Peng lanterns contest, Miss Yee Peng contest, Yee Peng kids contest, handmade krathong contest, and more.

Lanterns have been used as decorations in eight major spots to add vibrancy and colour to the city.
