The WHO (World Health Organisation) created the event in 1987. This year they proposed that the slogan would be ‘Tobacco Industry Interference’, focusing on how to penetrate the complex marketing strategies of the tobacco industry and “the need to expose and counter the tobacco industry’s brazen and increasingly aggressive attempts to undermine the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) because of the serious danger they pose to public health.”

There were four marches around Chiang Mai city led by Chiang Mai Health Office and schools from Sansai, Maerim and Hangdong. The marches started at Tapae Gate and went on to Buddhasatan, Tapae Gate to Chiang Mai Gate, Tapae Gate – Changphuek Gate and Tapae Gate – Suandok Gate.
