CityNews – A mixed-race Thai man from Chiang Mai has posted a video on YouTube where he hails a number of red trucks from outside MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Mall in both English, Thai and Northern languages to see if the prices are different.

The YouTuber who goes by the name Mr. Zoro Zonata, did an experiment to see whether Red Trucks or Songtaews would quote more or less for a trip from MAYA to Central Festival depending on the language used when hailing them.

The video shows that foreigners on the whole are charged around 100 baht, but both Thai and Northern Thai speakers can also be quoted up to 100 baht. However, some drivers quoted as low as 40 baht when the man spoke Northern Thai.

What the video shows is that although the language used in hailing a red truck may not have a difference on the price, the red truck drivers all have their own price and there is no standard.

Prices from the journey ranged between 40 baht and 100 baht, and drivers seemed to quote a price depending on the situation and the person asking more than on the distance or location of the collection and drop-off.
