The Chiang Mai Tourist Business Association has conducted examinations of 12 hotels in the province which are owned by Chinese investors and found three of them to be operating illegally. The three hotels have not been named, but the association says that it is continuing its investigations and will take legal action once the financial documents have all been studied.

“The government officers have been careless, allowing foreigners to own hotels by modifying dormitories or other buildings without proper documentations or permits. They are also conducting illegal activities such as running tours without necessary licenses. The association is concerned that all the income is leaving the country and is not being subject to taxation. On the other hand, we welcome all legal Chinese businessmen,” said Pornchai Jitnavasathien, Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association.
