Earlier last week the prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha gave an order to local authorities to intensify regulation on bird-feeding at public spaces nationwide. The order came after frequent complaints by citizens concerning hygiene.

The Deputy Mayor of Chiang Mai Municipality revealed that in the city the order mainly concerns two main places, Nung Buak Hard Park and Tha Pae Gate which the office has been trying to remedy the issue for over a year but the pigeons still remain and continue to grow in number.

Prasert Taduk, a 70 year old municipality’s maintenance stated that he needs to clean Tha Pae Gate twice a day due to the mess from pigeons along with cleaning trash littering on the ground. He witnesses bird feed sellers on the premises and tourists feeding the birds despite the warning signs. He also made a remark that the number of birds have been growing steadily in the past couple of years. The municipality is still working on solving the issue.
