The canal was identified as once being a source for fresh water into the city, first built by the Northern King Mang Rai.
The survey was to evaluate the best way to reduce and prevent improper sewage dumping in both the canal and the Ping River, in a bid to clean up the waterways of Chiang Mai.
There has been a 50 million baht budget set aside for the cleaning up and development of waterways in Chiang Mai, which authorities predict will take five to six year to complete.
