CityNews – The Bank of Thailand has announced the release of a new set of bank notes bearing the portrait of King Rama X, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

The new notes were unveiled this morning, March 8, 2018, at the Bank of Thailand. The new set of notes will enter circulation on April 6, 2018 – the 236th anniversary of the Chakri dynasty.

The notes will replace the old notes bearing the portrait of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej but according to the Bank of Thailand, the old notes will still be legal tender.

On April 6, the 20 baht, 50 baht and 100 baht notes will enter circulation. The 500 baht and 1000 baht notes will enter circulation on July 26, 2018 – the King’s birthday.

The front of the notes have been re-designed and will display the portrait of King Vajiralongkorn in his air force commander uniform and the back will display all 10 past and current kings of the Chakri dynasty in pairs on each note starting from 20 baht.

To ensure a smooth changeover, the sizes and colours of the notes remain the same as the old series, however additional advanced counterfeit deterrent features have been added, including a security thread on the front side of the note (with extra moving effect on 100 baht notes) and a vertical serial number in Roman alphabet and Arabic numbers.
