The new regulations come into place on May 1, 2016 – banning motorcycles and pushbikes from the Airport overpass and the Don Kaew underpass.

According to Pol.Col Piyapan Pattarapongsin, superintendent of the Chiang Mai Traffic Police, said that during a meeting on April 20, the police and other departments decided on the measure to help reduce the number of traffic accidents.

These two places were found to be the most dangerous, so the trial will begin at the two locations first and may expand to other locations in the city if successful.

After the new regulations were announced, social media exploded with negative comments and complaints from locals, both Thai and foreign.

Pol.Maj.Gen Montri Samboonyanon said that the police are willing to hear the opinions of locals and take their comments into account, but if the new regulations prove to help reduce traffic accidents, they will stay. He added that strict regulations like this must stay if they are successful.
