CityNews – Local government departments joined with Regina Coeli College and local community leaders to discuss the future of the green space in the Chang Klan area which was recently brought to national attention by protest and rejection of the land being turned into apartments for government workers.
On August 27, a confrence was held at Regina Coeli College where government departments, local leaders, teachers, local businesses and the Chiang Mai public discussed the future of the largest remaining public green space of land the Chiang Mai municipal district.
Conference participants agreed that the land should be left as a green space, with the potential of turning it into a local park where people may enjoy free time and researchers can study vegetation. It would also be a great place for tourists to visit if developed sustainably and with quality.
It was also agreed that the highly congested Charoen Prathet Road, off which sits the contested land, and which is home to four large schools, should not be subject to the significant increase in traffic a 900-unit housing development would bring, and that the green space would help offset carbon in the city.
