Hypothetical Hostage Situation Drill at Chiang Mai International Airport

CityNews – On August 26, Group Captain Wisut Chantana, director of Chiang Mai International Airport, presided over a partial emergency exercise 2015, in accordance to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization: ICAO, at Chiang Mai International Airport.

The exercise was an effort to test the promptness, precision, and expertise in managing, controlling, and commanding in emergency situations as well as to test the competency of equipment and tools involved with security, fire extinguishing, rescue, emergency medical care and communication in order to ensure confidence and security to passengers.

The officials set up a hypothetical situation involving five suspects with guns attacking the airport, taking 10 passengers and the airport’s staff as hostages, and negotiating with officials to let them escape to another country. As seen in photos provided to Citylife for this story, the hypothetical assailants wore exaggerated costumes meant to resemble terrorists.

The exercise was joined by institutes involved, including the Special Operations Regiment and Royal Thai Air force.
