CityNews – A Hornbill Reintroduction Project has been launched at Shangri-La Hotel Chiang Mai.
A collaborative project between Thailand Hornbill Research Foundation, Mahidol University, Kasetsart University, Zoological Park Organization, Mae Kham Pong village, and Shangri-La Hotel Chiang Mai with Galli Demis as a consultant, was launched on May 31st at Shangri-La Hotel Chiang Mai.
The event features an academic exhibition and a talk by Prof Dr Philai Phoonsawad, an ornithologist who has received awards on environmental preservation from The 2006 ROLEX Awards for Enterprises and The 52nd Annual Chevron Conservation Awards.
Hornbills play a significant role in the local ecosystem. Not only do they helps spread seeds, but as a predator, the hornbill also helps control the population of small animals. There are studies that have revealed that several species of plants are facing extinction due to the ever decreasing number of Hornbills in the area.
The project aims to release seven pairs of hornbills into the local forests near Mae Kham Pong Village where a team will track them and monitor their status and breeding. The long term goal for this project is to restore the ecosystem and the forest for generations to come.
