According to Police Colonel Weerayut Prasobchokchai, superintendent of Muang Chiang Mai Police Station, metal detectors were used to scan tourists’ bodies, bags, and belongings, to prevent dangerous objects. Vendors were asked for cooperation to monitor suspicious objects and people. If anything suspicious is observed, vendors were asked to inform local officers right away. This security operation is drastically heavier than the usual security seen at walking street markets on the weekends. The heightened security is a reaction to the recent bombing in Bangkok.
