The officers had earlier received a tip-off that many migrant workers working here illegally were heading into the city.

They discovered the vehicle driven by Jaipan Pokam, a Burmese national transporting 12 illegal immigrants. Jaipan admitted that they had crossed the border from Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai sub-district. He was hired to take them to Bangkok for 6,000 baht per person and had to pay the agent 50% commission. He had planned to hide them in his house in Chiang Mai before putting them onto a bus that night.

The Office of Social Development and Human Security will take care of the immigrants before sending them back to their country.

Last year Jaipan was already arrested and jailed for six months for the same crime. Once released he was arrested again before being released on bail.
