CityNews – The Tourism Department and the Transport Ministry will next year begin the installation of road signs in Chinese across the country, including names of roads, places and directions, in efforts to reduce traffic accidents and make it easier for Chinese tourists to find their way around major cities such as Chiang Mai.

After the steady increase of Chinese tourists visiting the kingdom over the last few years, installing a third language on many of the signs around the country, specifically Chiang Mai, is seen as a logical step by both departments, in order to help visitors fully understand Thai traffic laws and prevent accidents.
Chiang Mai had over 420,000 Chinese visitors last year, with a predicted forecast of 7.4 million Chinese tourists to arrive in Thailand over the next year.
The Bangkok Post reported that Wanasiri Morakul, deputy director of the Tourism Department, said the agency also plans to install QR codes at key tourism destinations, including Unesco World Heritage Sites, to provide tourist information and directions.
The QR codes would also provide a list of cultural “do’s and don’ts” for Chinese visitors.
