CityNews – A Chiang Mai man has been arrested for raping eight women between June 2015 and early this month.
On May 23rd, the Chiang Mai police arrested 29-year-old Pornchai ‘Pluak’ Nanta at Krua Ton Nam Ton Khao in Phayao Province for multiple counts of rape after having spent a year tracking him down.
In June 2015, a woman reported to Chiang Mai police that as she was riding her motorbike down one of the ring roads late at night when a man also on a motorbike, came up behind her vehicle and kicked it until she fell to the side of the road. He proceeded to rape her and stole her belongings. Over the next four months a further six women riding motorbikes along the outer ring roads were victims of the exact same crime. The crimes appeared to have stopped in October last year.
Each incident occurred along a quiet stretch of the road at night, and a man was reported to have kicked the – mostly middle aged or older – women off their motorbike, raped them and robbed them. All women say that he smiled and asked them after each rape whether they were happy. There were no leads last year, though Thai media reported that the victims all claimed that they could identify their rapist by his abnormally small penis. Police suspected that the rapist would strike again, and earlier this month, on May 5th, he did, in San Phee Sua Sub-district. Thankfully with the recently installed Police Eye CCTV cameras they were able to track him to a 7/11 in Sansai where they caught a clear image of him.
Two men were arrested earlier in the year, but released after their faces didn’t match the CCTV footage.
After he was identified by the captured image, police discovered that Pornchai had a long record of causing trouble and issued a warrant for his arrest. When police learned that he was working in Phayao they managed to arrest him at his place of work.
Pornchai has confessed to all eight rapes and explained that he enjoyed watching Japanese pornography on YouTube but became frustrated about his own penis size, that combined with his strong sexual urges, led him to hunt for women to rape.
He has been arrested and awaits trial.
