Unfolding Kafka by Alliance Française

November 24 - November 25

A platform for outstanding artistic trends in the field of contemporary performance in Thailand, presenting the persistent fascination for Kafka’s style and his mysterious character reveals and provides us with room for interpretation.

“Unfolding Kafka” is a cooperation between the Goethe-Institut Thailand, Japan Foundation, French Embassy of France in Thaïland, MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, the Rose Hotel Bangkok, World Performances @Drama Chula, Embassy of Israel in Thailand and 18 Monkeys Dance theatre. Unfolding Kafka is a biennial festival, which provides a platform for outstanding artistic trends in the field of contemporary art in Thailand. For the 2nd edition in 2017, the festival will be held during November 3-22, 2017 in Bangkok and November 24th to 25th, 2017 at MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai.

The persistent fascination for Kafka’s style and for his mysterious characters reveals and provides us with room for interpretation. In a natural and rational way, Kafka combines obscure and surreal scenarios with the real world, a motif which today is used in a variety of literary and cinematic formats. But, we intend to challenge our Thai audience to explore other interpretations of Kafka’s works through abstract and conceptual art.

The Festival poses the question of how choreography, physical movements, installations, sculpture and visual art interact to address animalism, gender and identity, folding and unfolding material or bodies. Conceived as a multidisciplinary approach, the festival focused on the relationship between material and choreographic design, perception and literature interpretation, design of inner and outer space of the human body, interaction and participation between different medium.
