Chiang Mai Inthakin Festival, where Chiang Mai residents to venerate the guardian spirits of the city. The Inthakin Pillar was laid by Chiang Mai’s first king, Mengrai, on the spot where the city was founded the morning of April 4th in the year 1296. The pillar itself is associated with God Indra and is believed to offer protection and stability to the city and its people. In the early 19th century the pillar was moved from a spot nearby the Three King’s Monument to Wat Chedi Luang, one of Chiang Mai’s most important Buddhist temples. The Inthakin Festival takes place over six days and is marked by a number of processions in and around the old city moat.
