THE BATHING RITUAL CEREMONY FOR PHRA THAT HARIPHUNCHAI CHEDI

Lamphun province will hold the Bathing Ritual Ceremony for Phra That Hariphunchai Chedi with sacred water from Ka-Mhor Mountain. This ceremony includes a holy sacred water parade, ritual performances, a giant drum competition, and a bathing ceremony for the chedi, usually held on the 15th day of the 6th waxing moon.

Religious ceremonies and other events will be held on Visaha Bucha Day, a national Buddhist public holiday, the 8th May, in commemoration of the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha. The route will start from Kruba Srivichai Monument at 7:59 p.m. on the 7th arriving at 2 a.m. at Doi Suthep followed by merit making on the 8th.

CHIANG MAI’S ANNUAL INTHAKIN CEREMONY

Chiang Mai’s annual Inthakin ceremony is being held at Wat Chedi Luang. This temple is home to the ‘Pillar of the City’; a totem used in ancient Thai fertility rites. This traditional Buddhist ceremony celebrates the image of Phra Chao Fon Saen Ha, which is believed to possess a power to induce rain and produce fertile agricultural growing grounds. The ceremony will be followed by a fair at the temple.
