La Luna Gallery, in cooperation with Elephant Parade (Thailand), is presenting a special preview exhibition of Painted Elephants by Thai artists. The Jumbos will be travelling to join the big parade in Amsterdam this autumn. Elephant Parade organised very successful events in Rotterdam in 2007 and Antwerp in 2008, raising awareness & money for Asian elephants, by exposing these unique ‘Jumbos’. Smaller painted elephants also available as well as some new artworks by the artists. Opening on Friday June 5th at 7 p.m.

The original inhabitants of this area were the Lawa, who in the early days are thought to have been cannibals. According to tradition, Pu Sae and Ya Sae are the guardian spirits of Chiang Mai, who now roam the slopes of Doi Suthep. Legend has it that the Lord Buddha visited Chiang Mai. These two, brother and sister, followed him with the intention of killing and eating him. Buddha managed to persuade them to give up their cannibalistic ways but they pleaded with him to be allowed to eat buffalo flesh instead, even if only once a year. So once a year at the beginning of the rainy season, a buffalo is ritually sacrificed.

The four categories for submissions are Deep Sky Objects, Astronomical Phenomenon, Objects in Solar System and Natural Scene & Astronomy. The winner will receive a trophy and 15,000B from the Minister of Science and Technology. The winner will be announced on the website on July 15th.

XI INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S DRAWING AND PAINTING COMPETITION JOY OF EUROPE 2009

The main topic of the competition is ‘A Dictionary of Friendship’. The Dictionary comprises 15 words: Europe, friend, freedom, bird, child, mummy, daddy, sun, joy, book, peace, bread, song, love and game. The organisers, with the help of a panel of judges, will select works to be exhibited and will chose the best from these to award ‘Joy of Europe’ medals for both individual and groups of paintings in three age groups (5 to 10, 11 to 14 and 15 to 18). The winners of the Gold Medals ‘Joy of Europe’ in the individual category will be the guests of Belgrade and the International Gathering of the Children of Europe from 1st – 5th October 2009 at the organiser’s expense and the awards will be presented at the opening of the exhibition, which will take place on 1st October. Travelling expenses to and from Belgrade will be met by the prize-winners.
