Comfort Food

 |  August 1, 2014

Rainy season is the perfect time to guiltlessly while away an afternoon loading up on yummy carbs, tasty treats and old-fashioned Thai comfort food. Here are three places to do just that!

Rod Mue Jaew

This clean yet rustic Thai food restaurant offers dishes inspired by aunties and influenced by modern styles, producing some of the best contemporary takes on Thai food available in Chiang Mai. Opened in tribute to Auntie Jaew, the recipes reflect the creativity of the owner’s beloved aunt and showcase truly exotic flavours at amazingly good prices. Apart from signature dishes such as Chinese kale, spicy pork neck salad and wasabi prawns, Rod Mue Jaew now boasts a vast new  vegetarian menu, with dishes such as stir fried mushrooms with curry powder. The restaurant also offers a monthly subscription service of three story Indian lunchboxes, also know as binto, delivered right to your door each day. The programme was started to cater to the elderly and disabled, but is now available for anyone who signs up.

Open daily 11am – 9.30pm (closed Mondays)

Melt Away Bakery

With a fresh interior and quaint design, this brand new bakery feels more like a friend’s country kitchen than a commercial space. Owner and baker-in-residence Fon discovered her passion for baking when a friend asked her to help make a cake for her son. “I find baking relaxing and rewarding,” she says. “It’s not part of my culture, but I love it! I don’t alter the recipes to cater for Thai tastes. I want to make the cakes your Grandma made.” Fon’s array of delicious concoctions include New York cheesecake, red velvet cake, apple pie, chocolate pumpkin brownies, scones and yummy gluten free and vegan options.  Melt Away also offers boutique teas, locally sourced coffee, healthy smoothies, and even a selection of wine (high quality imports no less)!

Open daily, 9am – 9pm on weekdays,

9am – 11pm  on weekends

Chiang Mai Bread

The only thing better than fresh baked bread is fresh baked bread delivered right to your doorstep! This little company that could is owned by Dutch expat Ruud and his Thai wife Noo, who have been baking fresh bread without any artificial ingredients and concocting a number of other delicious, healthy, vegan-friendly delicacies (all of which, conveniently, go quite well with bread) for the past year. Breads include whole wheat, multigrain, rye, baguettes, burger buns and, most recently, super healthy sprouted black rice bread. They also whip up delicious homemade hummus, peanut butter, bruschetta and seasonal mango salsa. All items are quite well priced (loaves start at just 40 baht), and home delivery is free. Just place your order via phone, Facebook or email one day prior, and items will arrive in the afternoon of the following day. 100 baht minimum for delivery within the city, outside available by request.
