Punna Oasis

In the Lanna language, “punna” is a word that means town or community, and that is the core idea behind Punna Development. From the first location off Nimman, to two more in front and behind Chiang Mai University, all of Punna’s condominium complexes provide cosy yet cosmopolitan living in prime Chiang Mai locations. The husband and wife team behind the company has stuck to their original idea throughout their seven years of operation: to build a community. And as Thailand’s second city becomes more and more developed, their goal is to move with the times while also retaining the elements that make the city unique: the culture, the lifestyle, the warmth. That is why they focus on spacious condos rather than sky-high towers. This isn’t Bangkok; it’s Chiang Mai.

Punna’s newest venture takes their notions of comfort and pleasure to a whole new level. Punna Oasis is designed to be an all-inclusive, resort-style residence, the kind of place you don’t need to escape on the weekends.  Located in the indubitably up-and-coming area off the Superhighway, right between two new megamalls: Central Festival and Star Avenue, Punna Oasis offers spacious living quarters with easy access to the city, as well as the new Bangkok Hospital which will open this year.  Punna Oasis is expected to welcome its first residents at the end of 2014, but presales are already going strong, with units starting at 1.2 million baht.

The modern, fully-furnished condos of varying sizes include air-conditioning, balconies, kitchens, and plenty of living space, along with access to an impressive array of recreational facilities. At the heart of the project will be a big green space, complete with a playground, a walking/jogging trail, and outdoor space for yoga, etc. There will also be an indoor fitness centre, a sauna, a garden, and one of Chiang Mai’s largest pools, featuring a children’s wading pool, adult relaxation pool and lap pool.  Safety is secure with CCTV, finger scan entrance and full-time security guards, and parking is plentiful. So what are you waiting for? Contact them today to reserve your future home sweet home.

David’s Kitchen at 909

Big news! The beloved husband and wife team of British-born David Gordon and his wife Prom (former restaurateurs of the Tharnthong Lodges) have just opened a truly spectacular new bistro, serving up what many are already heralding as the best food in Chiang Mai.

Enter down a long, tree-lined gravel road and you’ll emerge at a quiet, spacious green plot on the banks of the Ping, with trickling fountains and flickering candles scattered around the outdoor deck. Inside the cosy, feng shui dining room will soon be a library and a live jazz band playing every Friday and Saturday night, along with a state-of-the-art kitchen and full bar serving up truly fantastic French and Thai fare expertly created from scratch by Chef O.

Here, the golden troika is deeply personalised service, beautiful setting, and five-star cuisine. During the day, light dishes and beverages are served on the lawn, with full meals available well under 200 baht. For dinner, things get turned up a notch and specialties include the divine pan fried foie gras with sweet Thai mango chutney and cherry sauce, the tender braised lamb shank, the grilled duck breast with orange sauce and the braised veal cheek in red wine. All are delicious and quite reasonably priced for the quality, with French mains ranging from 350-720 baht and Thai dishes mostly under 200 baht. An extensive list of wines by the bottle or glass is also available, as well as a full cocktail menu with new creations concocted each month by master mixologist Bird.

For Valentine’s Day (which David’s Kitchen will be celebrating on Saturday the 15th since Friday is Makha Bucha Day and therefore officially dry), the restaurant will be serving up a special set menu with a bottle of wine, priced at 2,400 baht per couple. On 8th February will be the first monthly wine tasting night on the lawn, with canapĂ©s, BBQ and the kitchen’s famed chocolate soufflĂ© plus four glasses of wine for 999 baht per person.

At David’s Kitchen, you’ll enter to a welcome drink and come home to a personalised email thanking you for your visit _ now how’s that for service?
