Doo Dee Pub & Restaurant

Looking for somewhere to spend a chilled night out with friends? For good food, good tunes, good brews and plenty of space to enjoy it all, don’t miss Doo Dee Pub. A lively neighbourhood favourite located just south of Chiang Mai Gate, Doo Dee far exceeds expectations with a wide range of excellent 100% MSG-free dishes cooked up by a Thai and Western chef duo. Even our choosy Thai photographer was highly impressed with the rich, succulent and just-spicy-enough Penang curry, along with the lovely shrimp pad thai. For the Western palate, Doo Dee offers a variety of homemade pastas and yummy brick oven pizzas (our farang pizza-loving writer was thoroughly pleased as well), along with salads, sandwiches, soups, steak, burgers and a variety of snacks and apps. On Wednesdays, 12-inch pizzas cost only 155 baht, or 200 baht with a glass of beer or wine. Daily specials rotate, with a selected meal and your booze of choice available for 200 baht or less most nights of the week. Chang and Tiger beers are available on tap as well as bottles of Hoegaarden and Leffe and draught beer towers, all offered at reasonable prices. Seasonal shakes and lassis cost only 55 baht each, and there is a plethora of tasty cocktails and spirits for those looking to step it up a notch, with extended Happy Hours offering three for two beverage deals from 3 – 7 p.m. daily. A large wraparound bar acts as the centrepiece of the spacious open-air first floor, while the breezy second floor dining room features rotating local artwork and monthly BBQs and buffets on the last Saturday of each month throughout the low season. (This month features a 199 baht all-you-can-eat BBQ on 27th July, starting at 7:30 p.m.) The upstairs dining room is also available to rent out for special events anytime; just give them a call!

Open daily, 3 p.m. – midnight (closed Sundays)

Walen International School

Renowned for its tried and true language-learning methods, Walen International School is on the brink of opening a brand new location in Chiang Mai. Hard to miss with its signature purple and yellow sign, the new branch will be located on Chang Klan Road right next to the Night Bazaar. With this new, more commodious building, the latest Walen School will have the extra room needed to host a greater influx of students wishing to develop or learn new language skills. While focuses are predominantly on Thai and English, Walen also provides instruction for learning almost every other major language across the globe. As new locations surface, the “Walen Method” remains the same. With the guidance of seasoned instructors, students are encouraged to practice through “a natural learning process,” which integrates an orderly fashion of listening, imitating and writing while maintaining a stress-free environment. After taking just one language course with Walen International (courses range from three months to one year depending on the pace at which you wish to learn), the school guarantees each student will be able to speak, listen and read in their language of choice. Encouraging focus, dedication and open-mindedness, all Walen Schools offer 50 minute lessons with 13 different study options to fit an array of busy schedules. Classes are limited to a maximum of 12 students to build stronger teacher-student relationships and ensure the best possible outcomes for learning, with classes starting at 8,960 baht for 45 lessons. Private lessons are also available, but they are more expensive due to space constraints and instructor availability. If you are unsure if the Walen Method is for you, any location will happily provide a free, in-person demonstration of how it works. Walen International is also currently preparing to open their very first branch in Chiang Rai, specifically in the Ban Du area near the university (again, just look for the purple and yellow sign)!

Open Mondays – Fridays, 9 a.m. – 8.30 p.m.; Saturdays – Sundays, 10 a.m. – 5.30 p.m.
